Getting Money out of Politics:
Any politician taking large sums from corporations or private individuals becomes more beholden to their donors than the people that voted for them. If Democrats want to represent the people, they must swear off the corporate cash machine. Bernie showed it could be done with his $27 average contributions and other must follow suit if they want our votes.
Reducing Economic Inequality:
Because of massive deregulation, unbalanced trade agreements and skewed tax policy over the past 30 years, under both Democrats and Republicans, we are now facing the greatest economic inequality since the Depression. These failed policies have allowed nearly all gains in productivity to be captured by the 1%, leaving working families worse off than they were in the 1970's. Democrats have so far refused to address this issue head on for fear of losing their corporate cash machine. The blinders are now off. No one will accept Democrats as the party of working people until they are willing to directly confront the policies and interests that are behind this economic inequality.
Wall Street Accountability and Consumer Protection:
Our government has been largely captured by Wall Street interests and the financial industry as a whole. Witness the lobbying groups that write our legislation and the constant revolving door of Goldman-Sachs alumni in key government posts under both Democratic and Republican administrations. The crash of 2008 clearly showed that we cannot afford to have the health of our nation so intimately tied to the health of Wall Street. Yet, nothing substantial has been done to address this threat in the 9 years since. We need Democrats as a whole to clearly stand up against Wall Street interests and fight for accountability and an equal playing field for working people. Sanders and Warren can't do this alone. No more front-running and gaming the system. No more outrageous credit card fees and usurious rates. No more false ratings, bogus CDO's and gambling with the people's money.
Other Priorities:
Social justice is important and that fight must continue, but I can't feed my family with it. Convenient sops, like Lilly Ledbetter, just won't cut it anymore. Democrats have to stand up against the moneyed interests and support the working class. We can no longer afford to give them a pass on economic issues because of social issues. The priority must be both/and.
What Motivates me to Take Action and Get Involved:
In the past, I have phone banked, walked precincts, attended protests, called my representatives and donated. I will do *none* of these going forward until I see Democrats regularly, actively and effectively confronting the 1% and corporate interests on behalf of working families. If they're not willing to work for me, I will do nothing for them. Talk is cheap - show me action!
