Let me say up front that every time I see Joe on television, he makes my skin crawl. His hypocritical, creepy, soft spoken ooze is more than I can usually bare.
Ok, with that said, I know he is the Senator from Connecticut and yes, Connecticut has more insurance companies than most other states but how about this from wiki about Joe's wife:
Since March 2005, Hadassah Lieberman has worked for Hill & Knowlton, a lobbying firm based in New York City, as a senior counselor in its health and pharmaceuticals practice. She has held senior positions at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, the American Committee for Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials-International (APCO), Pfizer, National Research Council, Hoffmann-La Roche, and Lehman Brothers.
Hill & Knowlton represents Glaxosmithkline.
So, his wife works for a huge public relations firm specifically in the area of "health and pharmaceuticals." How can this not be a conflict of interest if your household makes money in this manner and you are voting on this issue? Her income is specifically from the health care industry's lobbying agenda - not general health care.
Apparently, the New Haven Register didn't like the coincidence either and wrote an editorial criticizing the appearance of conflict of interest when Joe proposed a series of bills that would help the industry.
At TruthDig, Joe Conason wrote a piece about this in 2006 before the Senatoral election.
Joe Conason: Sen. Lieberman Literally in Bed With Drug Lobby
From the "Truth Dig" article:
Mrs. Lieberman signed up with Hill & Knowlton in March 2005. The firm’s clients included GlaxoSmithKline, the British pharmaceutical giant that manufactures flu vaccines along with many other drugs. In April 2005, Sen. Lieberman introduced a bill that would award an array of new government "incentives" to companies like GSK to produce more vaccines—notably patent extensions on other products, at a cost of billions to governments and consumers.
Please tell me why no one has bothered to mention this in the MSM.
