It's time we have a labor-minded person like Leo W. Gerard in charge of labor. In the event current Labor Sec. Hilda Solis doesn't continue into President Obama's second term, Gerard needs to be nominated. Sign the petition and let's make it known.

No labor leader has stood his ground or fought as hard as International President Leo W. Gerard to preserve and create union-wage jobs that support middle-class families and their communities.

What better to continue moving forward than nominating Gerard to Secretary of Labor.

As USW President, Gerard was instrumental in the formation of the Industrial Union Council of the AFL-CIO. He is a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Committee as well as serving on its Executive Council. He is also a board member of the AFL-CIO Transportation Trades Department and chairs the AFL-CIO Public Policy Committee.

Gerard also serves on the U.S. National Commission on Energy Policy.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I think he is a Canadian citizen.

Harry Reid will make some changes to the Senate rules regarding confirmation of appointees.  We'll have to wait and see just what those changes include.

a very long time ago I organized Environment-Labor conferences in Canada and I think he was there. There were also Americans and Canadians from the UAW abd OCAW and other large unions so I am not certain of his citizenship, but I am pretty sure he was with the Canadian Steelworkers at the time. He is a terrific person regardless though citizenship is relevant here.

We have only just begun and none too soon.

Geesh look at Warren. Heck PBO has a hell of a time filling judgeships much less all the other positions... Probably why he choose some of the people he did.

Besides I don't think it is appropriate to push for nominating someone else when there is no announcement that the person there is stepping down.

  •  I met him briefly about 5 years ago. (0+ / 0-)

Carol Pope of the Sierra Club and Leo Gerard both spoke at a USW event in St. Paul, MN.  I went to hear Carol Pope, but it was Leo Gerard that really impressed me.  I have been a fan ever since.

  •  Yes, he is a Canadian (0+ / 0-)

Originally a nickel miner from Sudbury, Ontario.  A very intelligent man who rose to the top of the union by sheer force of talent.  But he is unlikely to become a member of the U.S. cabinet.

I am sure that someone can be a cabinet member (other than President, of course) if born elsewhere, but after then becoming a naturalized American citizen - e.g., Henry Kissinger.  Similarly, someone in the same category can become the Governor of a state:  (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jennifer Granholm).

But I can't imagine someone being allowed (legally or politically) to become a cabinet member while still being a citizen of another country.
