Stand Up! Live Better!
Video with transcript.

This video has been posted several times on DK, and that's great. I am posting it again, but with the transcript. For the historical record. And then reading the words of the actual workers involved, it occurred to me that the transcript could be printed out and handed out at the Walmart events. Along with, or instead of, the campaign materials here:

Please follow bellow the Solidartiy Squiggle.

Why are Walmart Workers standing up all across the country?

Because we live in America and we work for the world's largest company and we're still not making it.

Because I have to choose between paying my bills and having enough to eat.

Because I'm 52 years old and I can't afford my own apartment on what I make at Walmart.

Because management bullies us and causes unnecessary stress.

Because I'm tired of working for a company where workers get cheated and cheaters get rewarded.

Because I want a better life for my son.

Because my management disrespects me in front of customers.

Because I'm tired of seeing my co-workers discouraged and frustrated.

Because of favoritism and unfair scheduling.

Because management needs to work with the associates when they're doing the work schedule.

Because the Walton family has as much wealth as 45 million American families.

Because long-term associates are being fired.

Because I'm tired of my store manager calling my fellow associates stupid.

Because they don't treat me like a human being.

Because my fellow associates have to use the local food pantries.

Because I am tired being discriminated by management.

Because we have to depend on each other check by check and borrow money from each other just to make it 'till the next week.

Because of all the favoritism in my store.

Because I love my job, but I hate the way I'm being treated unfairly.

Because when we speak out, Walmart retaliates.

Because if I weren't able to live with family, I would have to choose between health care and food.

Because we are people; we're not cattle. We deserve respect.

Because they treat my Mom with disapproval and I want my Mom to be treated with respect.

Because when I started college Walmart cut my hours.

Because I spoke out in my store and Walmart illegally fired me for it.

Because together we are stronger than we are alone.

Because I like to make a difference for those who are too scared to come forward.

Because Walmart can afford to pay us enough to live better.

There is power, there is power in a band of working folks
When they stand hand in hand.
That's a power, that's a power that must rule in every land:
One Industrial Union Grand.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
