Why would a well-off suburban single mother have an arsenal of at least six guns, three of which were used against her and dozens of schoolchildren and teachers by her mentally disturbed son?
As family and friends talk to national media, one answer to that question has emerged -- Nancy Lanza was more than a "gun enthusiast," she was "something of a survivalist" who bought guns because she "had been stockpiling" for the coming "economic collapse":
In the clip above, MSNBC's Chris Jansing also reported that Nancy Lanza "had a collection of guns, knew how to use them, enjoyed them" and that she taught her sons how to shoot.
Nancy Lanza had some serious guns -- a Glock 9mm handgun, a Sig Sauer 9mm handgun, a .223 Bushmaster assault rifle, a .45 Henry repeating rifle, a .30 Enfield rifle, and a .22 Marlin rifle -- in toto, an investment of several thousands in firearms for personal security.
Why did she bother with all that?
Possibly because she feared she would have to protect her fancy house and her food in the basement from marauding poors after the economic collapse.
Where did she get the fantastic idea that exurban Connecticut in the 21st century might come to be like the European Dark Ages?
Possibly because she was swayed by the various apocalyptic fantasies put out by far-right media, and sotto-voce encouraged by the gun industry.
Adam Lanza was obviously mentally ill, and ultimately a homicidal maniac.
Living around his mother's guns made that tragically easier.
