Bill Moyers is calling out senators’ two-faced views on the filibuster.
“When a party is in the majority, it wants to change the filibuster, until it falls from power and ends up the minority. Then the shoe’s on the other foot,” he says. “Such hypocrisy has cost the Congress its standing in public respect and cost our democracy the capacity to address the problems that threaten to overwhelm us. A banana republic does a better job at governing.”
And that’s why he’s now urging his viewers to encourage the Senate end this dysfunction once and for all. The solution, championed by the Fix the Senate Now coalition, is to end the silent filibuster, so the American people can actually see and hear out their senators. No more hiding in the shadows.
“Call it fair play for everyone, for Democrats and Republicans,” Moyers says. “Because chances are today’s majority is tomorrow’s minority. And vice versa.”
