DK Quilt Guild: A place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too.
I took a class recently given by Robin Gallagher. Her web site is
Robin Quilts etc. This is the quilt top I made. In the interests of not stepping on the original artist's pattern, I am not including any measurements here but just the photos of how I put it together.
This is the top as finished, ready to be sandwiched and quilted. I will donate it to the Helping Hands group I belong to and they will put it into the process that ends with it being on the lap of a veteran, a child in social services, a single mother in a shelter, somewhere where someone needs it.
Come below for the details.
These are the pieces needed for each block. My finished top is 20 blocks.
The following pictures of the way to lay it all out so it goes together right. I kept one laid out on a piece of flannel as the template because you can get turned around and put it together wrong and it won't fit later. The center square is the background fabric and the spokes come off it as shown here. Then rotate the other strips in.
Now sew the 3 small pieces together as shown.
and then sew them to the strip to make this set.
Do this for all 4 sets. It will look like this.
Now comes the trick. Sew the first set to the center square but only sew the seam half way down from the top like this on the center block.
You will use that loose end for the last seam. Next, sew the 2nd set to the square like this. This will be a full seam to join both sets.
You will sew each set together in turn, around the square. When you get to the 3rd set, you will use the open end of the seam you left.
The last seam will then go across the 3rd set to the end.
Completed block from the inside. I ironed the short piece seams out and the long piece seams in.
and the front side. When you finish the square, you square it at 12in.
20 blocks put together. The points should match up and most of mine do but....
I had a great time learning this block and will do another one for myself in black with shades of red or deep purple. Thanks for reading along.
