ROME, Ga. — On behalf of Coosa River Basin Initiative, the Southern Environmental Law Center filed a lawsuit against the city of Calhoun in Federal District Court for violating federal law and allowing harmful pollutants in drinking water.
That is the lede for the webpage for the Coosa River Basin Initiative coosa.org/…
The website for the Coosa River Basin Initiative (CRBI) describes the pollution itself and the areas where they are dumped. This is totally new to me as the information just seemed to appear suddenly. As the Brits say, I am gobsmacked!
The areas affected are located in areas which present clear and present danger to life, human and otherwise. The dumpsites surround well sites for municipal water as well as the water shed for the Coosawattee River where it loops 260 degrees around the one of the dumpsites itself.
Analysis shows PFAS pollutants, a persistent danger to public health. PFAS pollutants enter the ground water quickly and the river water even quicker based upon the locations of the dump sites. My drinking water comes from the systems shown on the maps of this page. Of course, I am concerned.
Surprisingly, most of the events pertaining to the poor decisions made by officials occurred fairly recently — as recently as 2023. As I had understood, the beginning of the dumping happened decades previously. Again, poor decisions, as it would seem.
Remember those EPA laws that got gutted over the years and then more savagely later? Yeah, this is what happens. It appears the decisions to dump was based upon cost of operation, meaning a budget issue. Then where did the savings go? Who authorized saving a few budgeted dollars doing wastes disposal improperly and probably illegally? To what gain? To who’s benefit? Questions it appears to be a deep story. We shall see where it goes.
