Even though George Steppinoffinit over at ABC thinks this was McCain's strongest showing (while admitting he still lost - big WTF & LOL) I think it was the worst performance of a Republican candidate in my lifetime. It will be remembered for decades to come as the last big gasp of the anti-abortion rightwing Christianist movement.
Rightwingers know that Obama is going to sweep into office with the highest margin of victory in modern times. It scares the hell out of them. Chris Buckley lost his job from the magazine his father founded for concurring with the obvious. This reminded me of a similar situation Bill Mahr found himself in a few years ago when speaking truth to power.
Created reality is the antimatter of reality. If the two ever get close to each other there's threat of a huge explosion. The Rovian propagandists and their media minion have been hard at work keeping a firewall between the two realities. It's their entire raison d'tere.
We are now seeing what happens when you set a cranky old man and an overzealous Alaskan witch burner loose to their own devices. In the final analysis, the most damning thing that McCain and Palin have done to the Republican party is to CHAIN it directly to the MOST VIRULENT form of "pro"-life extremism. McCain 'air quoted' the hopes of the Republican campaign directly into the toilet this election cycle, but the good news for the Republicans is that in the future, if they ever hope to assimilate back into the family of man, true conservatives will have to wrestle control of their party away from the religious right. It shouldn't be that hard. There really aren't that many of them and it's going to show up prima facie in just a few weeks.
Ladies and gentlemen, I believe we witnessed an historic event last night. The official point at which anti-abortion campaigning jumped the shark.
Enjoy.
