According to the Las Vegas Sun, Rahm Emmanuel has refused to clarify whether Obama will support this key labor legislation.
I really fail to believe that Obama is angling to piss off the millions of union members who busted their humps for him during the election--not this early, anyway. But Rahm Emmanuel in a meeting with business leaders (and it's odd that no meeting with labor leaders has yet been held) refused to clarify the Obama administrations' position on it:
Rahm Emanuel, in a meeting of chief executives and business leaders this month, declined to say whether the White House would support the legislation.
SEIU and other unions have committed to spending upwards of $10 million in an accountability campaign, money which is probably well spent. If this movement on the card check issue is real, it comes on the back of news that Labor is feeling left out by its exclusion from the ranks of Obama's economic team, as well as the delay in naming a Labor secretary. In other words, does the Obama administration already view Labor's needs as secondary to other economic interest groups? If so, then we need to start organizing to move them.
Time's-a-wastin'.
Update
Per comments, I neglected to mention what 'card check' is. I forget not everyone lives in my labor-nerd world. Card check is a means of getting union recognition by having a majority of workers sign union cards affirming their support for a union, rather than going through an election process which commonly results in employers firing supporters, threatening workers and generally scaring the crap out of people in the run-up to a vote. You can learn more about it here. It is organized labor's A#1 priority in the incoming administration.
