This reminds me of an Onion headline seen in 2001, after the end of the Bush inauguration. It went something like this:
Our Long National Nightmare of Peace & Prosperity Is Over
Looming over the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 in Wyoming, Minn., is a grinning portrait of former President George W. Bush, asking "Miss me yet?"
Bush billboard on I-35: "Miss me yet?"
Yes, that's the same George W. Bush whose last year in office was marked by some of the lowest approval ratings in the history of modern scientific polling...as low as 22% in one Pew Research poll.
I can’t help but hope this billboard will have the opposite of the intended effect. If advancing conservative political goals is your objective, I think asking people to reflect on the Bush years may not be the best way to achieve that. Right now, I think the best thing the Democratic Party has going for it is the GOP. From this pathetic attempt at rehabilitating GWB to the recent resurrection of Social Security privatization, we can thank the GOP for not knowing when to stop.
Likewise, it may improve people's opinion of Barack Obama if they are reminded of the state of affairs in place when he took office. It was Bush who started the war in Iraq. It was Bush who let the war in Afghanistan fester with little progress for eight years. It was Bush who added $5trillion to the national debt. It was under Bush that "the bailout", e.g.: TARP and the AIG payments, started.
It is that hard to remember that a mere 14 months ago people were counting the days until Bush left office?
