Hello everyone. I am a frequent reader and (very) infrequent poster here on Daily Kos. I appreciate all of the knowledge and insight of posters around here, even those that I occasionally disagree with. I am writing this diary to brag..well not really, I am actually looking more for advice, tips, insights, etc. But first, a little about me...
I am 32 years old, and grew up in Michigan in a low to mid middle class family. We were far from poor, but my parents never had much to set aside for an education. They would help if they could, and even if they couldn't, but I never wanted them to. I enrolled as a freshman at Eastern Michigan University the year after I graduated high school. I worked two jobs, and struggled to work, pay my bills, pay tuition and still find time to study.
I made it through the first year relatively unscathed, and came back for my second year at EMU. One of the jobs I had was working as a student assistant in the library. Between my first two years, the library moved from an old, dark, dusty building to a shining new building on the other side of campus. My original job was in circulation, however my old boss was moved to a new department and asked if I would switch over with him to Client Services, which I did. Sometime near the end of the first semester of my second year, my boss received a job offer elsewhere and left, and I was asked to temporary fill his position. I did that for a few months and enjoyed it, and applied for the job full time, which I was able to get. This allowed me to take 2 courses per semester tuition free, and would at least help solve my multiple job/paying for college problem.
Well that was making a long story longer, but to (finally) get back to my initial point, I have at long last graduated with my bachelors in Political Science. I am the first person in my family to actually come this far with my education, which I must admit feels good, despite the length of time it took, but the question remains "what now?"
I have been considering (In no particular order)
- Just staying where I am at EMU and perhaps looking for employment elsewhere when the job market improves a bit
- Looking for a job at least loosely related to my field of interest
- Staying at EMU and working on a MPA
- Taking the LSAT and attempting law school
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for any advice.
