Yes! After decades in the wilderness and NEVER in San Francisco the Giants WIN. And what made it especially sweet was the look on former President Bush's face throughout. But this is not a diary about gloating (well not entirely - as a Giants fan living in the wilderness of A's-ville across the bay Orange can sometimes be a lonely color - but not today). There are parallels to where we are now in our "Blue" family to be sure.
There is an inherent East Coast bias to sports reporting, sports awards and the like that is prevalent in the coverage of Major League Baseball. I mean the barely contained disgust at Joe Buck's reporting throughout this series for Fox at the apostasy of the SAN FRANCISCO Giants possibly WINNING has been palpable.
I see many parallels here amongst the punditocracy and the MSM regarding the midterm elections. The ragamuffin Giants - the everyman team of castoffs, old timers, oddballs and otherwise indefinable characters somehow managed not only to get into the postseason - but at the end to completely dominate it through pure grit. They used the underestimation by everyone out there - the Rockies. the Padres, the Braves, the Phillies, the RED Texan Rangers (Cliff Lee infamously dogging the Giants hitters even after they scored 20 runs in 2 games) - to keep focused and just keep their eyes firmly affixed to the long view.
It was never about this game or that during this entire season. It was about the very next game. Not the one we just played. But the ones to come.
One ... at ... a ... time.
We may very well get slaughtered in the elections tomorrow. But guess what? That is one election. We must now adopt the long view and begin to work anew in a perpetual Spring Training and seed a perpetual Farm Team to do better.
And we can. YES WE CAN. And we will. YES WE WILL. Starting November 3rd.
We can wring our hands all we want in self defeating parody over what POTUS did or didn't do, should have done or shouldn't etc. Hell I've been guilty of that myself. But at the end of the day one thing has always rung true:
We ARE the change we have been waiting for. We just need to believe again.
Those of us who bleed Orange and Black have never stopped believing - yes even after the ignominious performance in Anaheim in that horror show. And now? We are World Champions. IN George Bush's front yard. With him in the stands.
So who is with me? Ready to get to work on Spring training for the 2011 Season? It starts in 48 hours. Step up or get the hell out of the way.
