As a state worker and a member of a union I have felt that I can no longer sit around and wait for politicians and activists to work for me. Since hearing about the attack on workers rights beginning in Wisconsin earlier this year, I have tried to take control and stand up for myself. I have been writing, trying to get involved in local activities and hoping to go back to school to get my masters in Political Science or Public Policy. One of the things I have been doing to get more involved is volunteering for the Montgomery County Democrats and the election for county commissioner. Figuring that it would help me get a grasp of the local issues and the background of a political election, I decided to volunteer and help out. While making phone calls today at the phone bank I saw something that troubled me. Going through several pages of registered democrats I noticed that many of the registered Democrats are over fifty. I know I only was working with a list of a couple hundred registered voters, in a area of maybe 50,000 however, it left me feeling that there is so much work to do. Taking our country back from the tea party and these other right wing fundamentalists is not an easy task. It is going to take more then one person, more then ten, more then a hundred. It will take millions of Americans showing up in force saying "NO". No you cannot take our health care, no you cannot take our social security, no you cannot take our rights to collectively bargain, no you cannot keep pandering to the needs of the wealthy while the working people toil. Republicans give us enough material everyday to counter them. How every working American hasn't realized that the Republican has nothing for them but lower wages, less benefits and the present of fear instead of the future of hope. We need to get the word out that we will no longer sit idly by while they attempt to gut what we hold dear. We have to get out, register people, push the issues and don't give up. If we do all will be loss. Good Americans can no longer sit by, the tea party is at the gates and all they need is for Good Americans to stay silent just a little bit longer.
