To the "representatives" who voted for "right to work" yesterday:
How you’ve voted is saying to me that you want me to lose my job, my home and my future security. But I pay taxes…and taxes pay for your job. How is it possible that so many people can be hurt by the legislation you passed and you still have a job—which we’re all paying for? I have an idea…Since I disagree with you and your ideology and I didn’t vote for you, why can’t I refuse to pay the taxes that pay your salary? That way I can still “benefit” from your “services” but not pay for them, right?
Our state budget is in shambles but your actions are saying that if we put the entire burden on the middle class, somehow, magically, our budget woes will cease. There’s something missing in your logic: pay people less; they pay fewer taxes. People lose their jobs; they pay fewer taxes. People stop buying; profits go down, sales go down, businesses will pay fewer taxes (eventually, without a strong middle class, they’ll go out of business). How does this propel the economy forward when the counter-effect is so much greater? We need a stronger tax base to keep this state well-oiled and running. We need those taxes to pay for our representatives. But you want to cut the tax base? And still have a job? Well, in economics as in so many things in life, what comes around goes around.
