There are two reasons George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin; Trayvon Martin looks different and George Zimmerman is a coward. We are all different from each other. The greater the appearance of difference, the greater attention will be drawn. I remember as a teenager being in a department store with my father. My father pointed out the security guards to me because the security guards were watching. The reason they were watching he said was because I was big and wearing different clothes from their point of view. I was different. Every black person in America is different by virtue of skin color. While I could change my clothes and appear more similar to other people, there is nothing that a black person can do to change his skin color. Until we as a society learn that being different is insufficient reason to draw attention to some, individuals will have unwarranted attention.
My father wore a grey suit to work with a white shirt. He at most wore a mustache and only when he was on a vacation would he wear a goatee, always shaving the goatee off before returning to work. The reason is simple, he best not appear different in order to keep his job and get promotions.
I remember when I was a young man being stopped by the New Jersey State police on the New Jersey Turnpike. I had long hair and a full beard. In the process of showing the officer my ID card and car registration my RCA David Sarnoff ID card was shown to the officer. The officer quickly returned to his patrol car and sped off into the night. A friend of mine at work suggested that I call the ACLU which was seeking an injunction against the New Jersey state troopers for stopping people on the New Jersey state Turnpike for no apparent reason. I went on and testified in court. My testimony was short and concise. However, I listened to other witnesses who also testified in court. The New Jersey State police were stopping people only because they appeared different. I remember hearing the story of one family going out to a picnic that was stopped and the whole family forced out of the car to stand by the side of the road while their car was searched. Nothing was found. They were considered different. Eventually the injunction was granted.
Unfortunately skin color is a difference many people take into account when making decisions. I do not use the term race because I believe there is only one race and that is the human race. Until we teach our children not to be prejudiced against others because they are different than ourselves, more people will be discriminated against and even killed because they are different. This is unacceptable.
There are three reasons to carry a gun; part of the job, to kill someone, and cowardice. Carrying a gun was not part of George Zimmerman’s job. Either George Zimmerman wanted to kill someone or he was a coward and afraid to stand on his own 2 feet. I believe George Zimmerman is both a killer and a coward. I believe George Zimmerman got out of the car because he was afraid of Trayvom Martin and wanted to kill him. George Zimmerman was afraid of Trayvon Martin because he appeared different. I believe George Zimmerman was found not guilty because Trayvon Martin appeared different. There is no cure for cowardice. However, acting based on cowardice alone should be illegal.
The jury verdict has an unfortunate side effect. The side effect is that all people should arm themselves and shoot anyone who appears to be following them before they are shot by the follower. After all how is one to know that the follower is an armed and not out to shoot them.
