I really don't understand why this is even a question. But apparently it is. Yesterday I wrote a post called "Jews are NOT at war with Islam. But jihadi terrorists have declared war on Jews." In addition to clearly differentiating between Islam/Muslims as a whole and the Islamist terrorist group ISIS/ISIL/The Islamic State, and praising Muslim leaders for condemning these racist murders—including the murder of Jews specifically targeted as Jews—I also discussed the murders themselves and lamented that Jews all over the world must now be afraid to go to places that are recognizably Jewish.
While no two posts are alike, my intent was to create a space not unlike those created on this site after similar hate crimes. Recently, three young Muslim Americans in North Carolina were murdered by a non-Muslim, a horrific, sickening act that is currently being investigated as a hate crime by the FBI. Although those murders are not an exact parallel to the jihadi murders of Jews, posts that went up here about those North Carolina murders were spaces to mourn, to express fear, to express support, and to condemn hate. Those posts appeared to offer real solace, especially to those whose community was the target of the murders.
Some who posted comments in my diary on the murders of Jews brought up Israel's actions and how they may have led to these murders. On an related note, I wonder what actions by Coptic institutions led ISIS to kidnap and behead 21 Egyptian Copts. To those who posted about Israel/Palestine in the comments of my post, or to anyone who thinks it was reasonable to do so, I'd ask this: Did or would you go into the comments of the post(s) about the murdered North Carolina Muslims and mention that perhaps the 9/11 attacks might have something to do with why people are targeting Muslim Americans. It does—at least according to those who hate Muslims—just as ISIS cites Israeli policy to justify killing Jews all over the world. But I would expect everyone here to recoil from starting a discussion about 9/11 in a post mourning the murder of Muslim Americans. And although this post isn't about the rules of the site, it's worth noting that there are rules about hijacking a thread and going off topic (See point 3 under "An Exegesis for Troll Ratings.") The topic is defined by the post itself.
The point I'm making here is that there is a time and a place to criticize Israel. In fact, most times and places are just fine. I should know, because I've done so. And to be sure, very few of those who brought I/P into my post did so in a way that was overtly hateful. But we also need to recognize that Jews—along with Muslims, African-Americans, and every group whose members are targeted by hate crimes—deserve and need a place to mourn, to express fear, to express support, and to condemn hate, and to do so free from debates that force them to leave the emotional place they are in and engage in political combat. Is that really so much to ask?
