This is just pathetic. The staff of Florida Sen. Marco Rubio—the candidate of tomorrow—has reportedly met regularly with the gay group the Log Cabin Republicans in order to reach out to them, but his staff won't confirm it. Here's Luciana Lopez
with the details:
The Florida senator's staff have held quarterly meetings with the Log Cabin Republicans "going back some time", their executive director, Gregory Angelo, told Reuters. The meetings with the advocacy group were to discuss legislation, issues and opportunities to "partner on," Angelo said. Rubio's office declined to comment on the meetings.
This, from a guy who's supposedly so down with the gay thing that he'd
attend a same-sex wedding.
You almost have to feel sorry for Republicans. They're trying to court people like the forward thinking Bob Vander Plaats, who heads the conservative group The Family Leader in Iowa.
Vander Plaats said he wanted to hear specific strategies from the Republican candidates on how to fight gay marriage. Any attempts to straddle the issue would be a problem for him, he added.
While calling attendance at a gay wedding a personal decision, "I probably wouldn't be going" to a same-sex ceremony, he said. "That shows me endorsing and supporting something that I frankly really disagree with."
It's okay, Bob, no one wants you at their gay wedding. And good luck with those "specific strategies" to fight marriage equality. You might run into a little stumbling block known as the Supreme Court. And if not that, you might hit a demographic wall. But hey, don't let that stop you. Keep on keepin' on. Think outside the box. Inspiration is sure to come.
