Dontrell Stephens being shot in the back by a Palm Beach County officer
In Palm Beach County, Florida, police, according to their own investigations of themselves, can do no wrong whatsoever. No matter how egregious the circumstances, they have determined that at least 97 percent of their lethal shootings
are completely justified. Even the egregious shooting of Dontrell Stephens, who was completely unarmed and riding a bike,
has been found justifiable by Palm Beach County. This in spite of the reality that the dashcam filmed the officer shooting Stephens in the back.
According to WPTV in Palm Beach, Commissioner Priscilla Taylor has recommended that a citizens review board be put in place.
On Tuesday, a Palm Beach County commissioner will be asking the county to consider creating a citizens review board to assist the sheriff’s office with investigating use of force cases.
All law enforcement agencies within the county could have the opportunity to work with a review board, not just PBSO.
It's highly doubtful, though, that the law enforcement community will openly accept such a board. In St. Louis, the opposition to such a board was so fierce that
a shoving match took place between the police union and members of the community. In spite of police opposition, a board was
ultimately approved there by the city council.
