If your perception of modern society is anything like mine you see decay and degeneration in all our institutions. One of the most obvious is religion. We see again and again organized religious groups taking stands that are totally contradictory to what their religion teaches.
I was a very strong follower of religious teachings until I was 21, 57 years ago. During the time I was changing my ideas about religion I was also learning that my religious teachings had made me a socialist. This process went on and eventually led me to become a charter member of the Democratic Socialists of America .
I could never go back to religion myself but DSA has a place for religion: Religious Socialism site
The DSA Religion and Socialism Commission is pleased to announce the re-launch of its publication Religious Socialism within the new Religious Socialism website.
Religious Socialism was founded by John Cort as a newsletter in 1977. It ceased publication more than a decade ago. The electronic RS is a work in progress. We invite you to join us in making it useful both to people of faith within DSA and to the wider religious left.
As Bernie Sanders gains momentum it seems logical that religious people who are serious about what their faith teaches should see a chance for putting life back into their beliefs with political action. Read on below for more.
Bernie speaks about "political revolution" being necessary. I agree as long as we interpret "political" in the widest possible way. Our civilization is crumbling as we watch and there is little happening in any of our institutions to deal with it. The fascist mentality has permeated every institution, including religion, and has corrupted them all. People seem a bit dazed by it all at the moment yet with people like Bernie and the Pope speaking out clearly they are being given a direction.
The word "socialism" has been neglected and misused for a long time in this country. I was young in the 1950s when McCarthyism did its ugly work. We never recovered from that propaganda barrage.
True revolution, in the broadest sense, is a kind of rebirth of the ideals and social contracts that bind a people together and allow them to act collectively for their own survival and to build a future for those who will come after.
No one can be left out of this or it is not real. Therefore I am happy that DSA is making strides toward the revival of real religious belief and practice in a socialist context. We are all in this together and there will be no second chance if I am right about which way the winds are blowing.
