There are 2,254 offices up in the 2020 election in Texas from President down to Justice of the Peace. 1,249 Democrats filed for office. 2,459 Republicans filed. Democrats did not contest 1,534 (mostly rural seats) Republicans did not contest 604 (most urban and south Texas) seats. Both parties have fielded a candidate in for every single statewide office, every single Federal office, except the GOP did not challenge Lloyd Doggett in CD35. Republicans fielded a candidate for every state Senate seat except Carol Alvarado's Houston-based SD6 and Jose Menendez' San Antonio-based SD26, whereas only Democrats left Charles Perry in the Lubbock-based SD28 unopposed. Democrats fielded candidates in 123 state rep seats, Republicans just 119 (yes, we are positioned to flip the house). Both parties had candidates for every State Board of Education seat, but Democrat Sharon Berry withdrew from SBOE8 after filing. 😢
Filing closed on Monday evening. As of this writing approximately 314 seats do not have a candidate from either party listed in the filings (both parties have til 5pm Friday Dec 13 to update and finalize list so my numbers will change as updates are made). Democrats in blue, Republicans in red, incumbents in italics, and people withdraw in strikethrough.
