March 18, 2024, was a beautiful day in Montana’s Flathead Valley and that meant a drive into nearby Glacier National Park. At this time of year, the road is only open to the Lake McDonald Lodge. Since the road was under construction, the pavement had been removed from the last stretch of road leaving an unpaved road with deep potholes.
Lake McDonald Lodge was constructed in 1913-1914 to resemble a rustic hunting lodge with Swiss-influenced architecture. Originally the entrance faced the lake as guests arrived by boat, but with the construction of the Going-to-the-Sun Road guests now arrive at what was originally the back of the lodge. In the winter, the lodge area is a favorite destination for cross-country skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts.
